TULI ADVANTAGES

Tuli advantages include:

  • Adaptation to Heat and Nutritional Stress - Tulis are moderate framed pure African Sanga cattle which thrived in the most adverse conditions and endured unbearably hot days and cold nights which enabled them to adapt to both hot and cold climates today.
  • Carcass Merit - The trait so many cattle raisers are excited about is their carcass merit. In study after study over the past five years, the Tuli breed has performed as well or better than most domestic breeds (including Angus) in the areas of quality grade, marbling, tenderness and ribeye area.
  • Fertility and Maternal Strength - They are exceptionally fertile. Females have nearly picture perfect udders and are excellent milkers.
  • Calving Ease - Low average birth weights of 65-70 pounds.
  • Disposition - Very quiet and easy to handle.
  • Outcross Genotype - Genetically unrelated to any beef breeds currently in the U.S.
  • Polled - 70%-80% are naturally polled.
  • Solid Color - Range from light silver to deep red.
  • Moderate Frame, Low Maintenance
  • Adaptability - Fat is stored internally, not subcutaneously as with most British breeds. Fat is easily mobilized to excel under heat and nutritional stress.

The Tuli is a pure African Sanga breed classified as Bos Taurus. Researchers in Texas, Nebraska, Florida, New Mexico and Georgia first introduced Tuli in an effort to find a breed that was comparable to the Brahman in characteristics such as heat tolerance, parasite resistance and foraging ability. What they discovered far exceeded their expectations. Not only did the Tuli breed match the environmental characteristics of Brahman, their carcass quality, disposition, calving eases, vigor and fertility were far superior to those of Bos Inducus breeds and crosses.

Dr. Bill Holloway of Texas A&M University stated it best when referring to his research conclusions: "The most significant results are the pounds of calf weaned per pound of cow exposed. The Tuli-crossed calves weaned 75% more pound of calf per cow exposed that Brahman: 53% more than Angus and 21% more than Senepole. This points to the efficiency, productivity, and adaptability of the Tuli. If you are running cattle in a hostile environment, with limited feed resources," added Dr. Holloway, "this study is very significant. For producers seeking optimum production, the Tuli offers tremendous advantages."

Suggested Crosses:

1. Cross with Brahman to upgrade meat quality, calving ease, early maturity, docility, and increase pound of calf weaned per pound of cow exposed without losing either heat or insect tolerance.

2. Cross with the English and Continental breeds to increase heat and insect tolerance, cutability, yield grade, and meat quality.

Perhaps the most important difference is that while they exibit an amazing ability to withstand heat, ticks and nutritional stress, they are a bos
taurus breed excelling in the traits that the bos inducus or zebu breeds do not.
